The Globes
I know that the Golden Globes were held on Sunday night and it is now Wednesday but this YMCA routine is really cutting into blogging time. Regardless, I did find time to watch the Golden Globes on Sunday night. The Globes have traditionally kicked off the yearly awards season, although a few others have started to infringe on that title by running their show in the weeks preceding.
This year's globes broke new ground as the first year there has been a host. In the past, the show consisted of presenter after presenter coming out and introducing each award. Emcee # 1 was Ricky Gervais. How did he do? I thought he killed. Others were not so sure, I was.
He was merciless with his jokes. He even joked at the expense of rock royalty when he made Sir Paulie the recipient of one of his zingers. The crowd wasn't as kind as Paulie who reportedly gave Ricky the seal of approval back stage.
The awards themselves were pretty entertaining. By the end of the telecast, most presenters and award recipients are tanked courtesy of the open bar. In year's past, some recipients have even been caught using the facilities at the time their awards were presented. Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for his role in Crazy Hearts, Sandra Bullock won for The Blind Side and James Cameron and Avatar won for Best Director and Picture, respectively.
While I really enjoyed Avatar, I'm not sure it was Best Picture material. That said, it was the Hollywood Foreign Press who thought it was. I expect different results come Oscars.
